Re: 2011 Round
Matthew, There are fewer facilities looking for aeros, but there are probably a lot fewer aero's applying too. Only 2500ish graduate each year in the country. As far as aero goes, it was definitely the right decision for me. I like electronics a lot too, and the RPI cirriculumn happened to also have...

Re: Orientation
We didn't need suits for anything. I wore khakis and a dress shirt for everything. Most of the reps wore khakis and polos.
Be sure to bring comfortable clothes too; we were on our own after 6ish for dinner and entertainment.

I assume you are referring to the internships.
Yes. If it's > 50 (or something) miles away from your summer address, you'll receive an extra stipend from SMART to pay for it.

You'll be able to back out through orientation. Don't worry about it too much.

Re: salary once you finish
Most the labs are in pay band type system which has greater flexibility that the rigid GS schedule. I'd recommend going to usajobs.com and searching for a position similar to that which you plan to attain and city or state, even for the same facility. That will give you some ranges. Most entry leve...

Re: Is there a FAQ page for the forms we have to fill out?
Ok, Chris, the form says I have until July 1st to pick the graduate school that I am going to attend. I am still attempting to sort out which of the programs that I have been accepted to will be more beneficial to both myself and to my Sponsoring Facility through discussion with my contact at the S...

Re: interning THIS summer
SMART will not sponsor an internship the first summer. If your facility would like to offer you one, that's great, however, you will have to coordinate with the base to get a temporary clearance.

Re: salary once you finish
You probably won't be able to negotiate much on what they have offered you. However, pay does vary significantly between regions (COLA) and bases.
A step increase is much more likely than a grade increase, but you'd still only be looking at ~$1k more.

Same as last year, it's applicant. You're hired through the normal hiring channels. The only difference is that you have a non-binding contract from someone saying that they'll hire you.

Re: Is there a FAQ page for the forms we have to fill out?
Are you sure there is not a sample degree plan in your course catalog? You should fill out the EWP for the degree that you were awarded the scholarship for.
You're an applicant.
There is no such FAQ . Maybe we could make this thread one.

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
Whatever. We haven't heard from an official source on this board during the entire process, and all of a sudden we get an official response. April Fool's day brings out the best in trolls, I guess. Please try to keep critical comments to a minimum. SMARTGuide has posted several times, most notably,...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
Talk about a letdown. I just got an email from NPS saying they would be notifying us if we have been cleared for secret clearance. Then received another email saying that the security specialist had received the wrong distribution list, and it had some folks on it who were not current SMART awardee...

Re: No phone interview request = bad sign?
Matthew, While they may want 25, I can guarantee you that SMART will not fund most of them. The AFFTC was one of the largest last year and we only had 7-8. It's not that those position may not be more important in some way, but that SMART is semi obligated to distribute slots in a 'fair' manner. It'...

Re: Current participant here.
For 2009, it was 4 days. There was a mixer the night we got there, two full days of stuff, then a closing meeting the last day in the morning. However, I think someone around here was saying that they were making it longer this year.

Did you have to pay for your orientation expenses such as plane ticket and hotel? How long was the orientation? Don't hold me to it, but I'm fairly sure orientation is a week long and they cover at least your travel expenses. I'm not sure about hotel or food though. At least that's what it sounded ...

Re: Switching field of study
If you change your degree, your facility will have to approve it first. SMART will also have to re-issue the award, but this isn't too much of a problem if the facility approves.

Hey guys,
Just to let you know, I've contacted someone as ASEE, and I'm waiting to hear back on the submission deadline that the facilities have.

Re: multiple phone interviews?
Unless you tell them, bases are unaware of anyone else who may have contacted you. You should definitely accept any interviews that are offered. Multiple bases are allowed to submit your name for final selection, and the placement decision will be yours unless one of them decides to back out. If you...
